Abstract
371,985. Cleaning metals; magnetic separators. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G., 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Kelley, G. L.; 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) Feb. 16, 1931, No. 4818. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1930. [Classes 72 and 82 (ii).] In cleaning metal sheets oil is applied to the sheets, the used oil being cleaned, preferably by passing it through a magnetic separator and a settling tank, and then re-used, a thin film of oil being left on the sheets after cleaning to protect them against corrosion. The process is particularly applicable to removing metallic particles formed when welded sheets are smoothed. Metal sheets 52, Fig. 5, are passed through adjustably mounted rotating cylindrical brushes 52<1> and under spaced guide struts 30 on to a downwardly moving conveyer 13 consisting of belts or chains passing over sprocket wheels 15, 16 on shafts 18, 19 respectively. The shaft 19 also carries sprocket wheels for the chains of an upwardly moving conveyer 14 the upper end of which passes over sprockets 17 on a shaft 20 which is driven through gearing from a motor 23. As the sheets are carried up by the conveyer 14 they are sprayed with oil from nozzles 35a, 35b, 36a, 36b on pipes 35, 36 arranged in pairs above and below the conveyer. The sprays converge on to the sheets and are directed downwardly so that surplus oil drains off the sheets into a sump 41 beneath the conveyers having a discharge 42 at its lowest point. After passing the oil sprays the sheets are carried by delivery rolls 31 to wiping rolls 32 covered with felt 33 which is protected by a covering 32a of woven cloth. More than one pair of wiping rolls with or without a pair of non-rotary wipers 34 may be used. The used oil draining through the discharge 42 passes into a magnetic filter 46, Fig. 1, containing magnets 48, permanent or electromagnetic, where metallic particles are removed and then through a conduit 43 into a tank 40. A settling tank 47 with spaced baffles 49 may be used, preferably shunted off the conduit 43 by pipes 50, 51. A pump 44 driven by a motor 45 draws the clean oil from the tank 40 and passes it through pipes 39, 38, 37 back to the oil sprays.
