Abstract
Butyraldehyde is obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde in the vapour phase using a nickel catalyst whioh is free from even traces of iron and cobalt. The catalyst may be prepared by recrystallizing a commercial nickel salt, e.g. nickel sulphate, the necessary number of times, e.g. four times, followed by conversion of the purified salt to metallic nickel. A small amount, e.g. 2 per cent, of manganese or a compound thereof may be added at any stage in the manufacture of the catalyst. The catalyst is stated to raise the temperature at which excessive decomposition occurs. Specifications 274,426 and 279,377, [both in Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], are referred to.
