Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 18.] A powder box comprises a casing 1 with hinged top and bottom covers, a sieve 5 fixed in the casing, a ring 6 which can rotate within a flange 2 on the bottom of the casing and which surrounds a plate 7 supporting powder or a block of powder. The plate 7 can slide up-anddown in the ring and is spring-pressed towards the sieve, and it is caused to rotate with the ring 6 by reason of a rib on the latter engaging a notch in the plate. Rotation of the ring 6 is effected by a knob &c. 15 which, indirectly, rotates a worm 13 in mesh with teeth on the periphery of the ring ; or the knob stem can be provided with a pinion in engagement with two racks, one fixed to the casing on which rack the pinion rolls, and the other to the ring ; or only the rack fixed to the casing need be employed, in which case the inner end of the stem of the knob is held between two projections on the ring; or the knob may be fixed directly to the ring. The slot in the casing in which the knob works is concealed by a member or ring sliding on the periphery of the casing ; and there may also be provided a spring to return the operating members to their original positions and an additional fixed knob to allow the device to be operated with one hand. The surface of the plate 7 is preferably rugous, i.e. covered with fabric or porous material. The casing and sieve may be circular or rectangular &c.
