Abstract
370,777. Making tubes. BUNDY TUBING CO., 4815, Bellevue Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Quarnstrom, B. L. ; 4802, Nottingham Road, Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, U.S.A.) July 21, 1931, No. 20797. Convention date, July 21, 1930. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Angular bending ; soldering.- Metal tubes with lap butt or lock seams or with double walls, are made by passing a strip, preferably previously tinned, through tube forming rolls &c. and then through two or more chambers in each of which it is subjected to a bath of molten solder as it passes therethrough. The solder may consist of pure metals or of an alloy of lead and tin, copper and silver, or copper and zinc. The metal strip passes from a reel 4 first through a flux or oil container 5 and then through driven forming rolls 2. The tube then passes through two or more solder applying devices 10, 11, and then through a guide 12 and through a pipe supplied with cooling water by a circulating pump 15. It is then passed through two series of pulling rolls 22, 23. Each solder supplying device comprises a pot 43 heated by gas burners 42 passing through a combustion chamber lined with fireclay 41 and communicating by a passage 47a with a hood 44a furnished with a chimney 46 and also with a door 45. A drum 47 provided with buckets 48 and secured to a hollow spindle 51 is rotated by chain gear 53 on roller rests 50 in the solder pot so as to raise the solder from the pot and discharge it into a V-shaped slot in a fixed pipe 55 arranged above the level of the solder and open at both ends. The chains are driven by belts 29, 30 on pulleys which may be clutched to a shaft 27 geared to the main shaft. The tube after passing through the pipe has surplus solder removed partly by a die 57 and then passes through an aperture 58 and through a cloth wiper 61, any solder wiped off falling on to the part 59 and thence back to the solder pot. The main shaft is driven by a pulley 25, and a control shaft 35 extends the length of the machine and is provided at intervals with control levers 36, sothat the machine may be started and stopped by the operator at any position.
