[Class 146 (i).] In a loose-leaf binder comprising a backmember 1, side-members 3,5, and covers 11, 13 hingedly connected together, the side-member 3 is slidable relatively to the side-member 5 to enable locking-devices carried thereby to be engaged with or disengaged from the ends of the binding-posts 15. The member 3 is slidable along its hinge-pin 7 so that slotted plates 23, 25 carried thereon are moved into and out of engagement with notches 19 in the posts 15. A leaf-spring 21 fixed to the member 3 rests on the hinge barrel when the plates 23, 25 are disengaged from the notches 19, but when the member 3 is moved to locking position the spring 21 snaps between adjacent parts of the hinge barrel and prevents movement of the member 3 to unlocking position. In order to release the spring 21, a rod is inserted through a hole 27 in the member 3. In one modification, a spring- pressed pin on the top of the post adapted to engage a perforation in the member 3, takes the place of the spring 21. In another modification, the spring 21 is formed as one arm of a spring-pressed bell-crank lever pivoted on the back-member 1, release being effected by operating the lever by finger. A compressorbar 71 may be placed over the posts and clamped on the leaves by a screw 73 threaded into a block fixed to the member 5. A cover-plate 75 may be hinged to the bar 71 and adapted to be locked thereto by a padlock so as to prevent tampering with the screw 73.
