[Class 55 (ii).] In the purification of coke oven or similar gas by fractional cooling at low temperature, naphthalene, benzole, water and ammonia are separated from the gas during the earlier stages of intensive cooling and sulphur compounds during the later stages of intensive cooling. The gas from a producer 1 passes through a cooler 3, tar separator 4 to a preliminary cooler 6 wherein the gas is cooled to about 5-20‹ C. by means of cold ammonia water from a container 31. The gas passes to a spray cooler 7 in which it is sprayed with benzole wash oil at a temperature of - 50--20‹ C., the oil being cooled in a refrigerator 10. The enriched wash oil is treated in separators 13, 311. Sulphur compounds are removed from the gases in a tower 8 which is sprayed with alkaline solutions containing iron oxides in suspension and at a temperature of - 5-- 20‹ C. The cooling liquids required are obtained from a refrigeration system in which waste gases from the producer are utilized.
