Abstract
368,378. Transformers &c. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Cole, H. L. ; 260, Case Avenue, Dann, W. M. ; 54, Hall Avenue, and Brown, R. L. ; 132, Woodrow Street, all in Sharon, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Dec. 5, 1930, No. 36692. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1929. [Class 38 (ii).] To reduce eddy currents within the conductors of transformer and like windings due to leakage flux, the conductors are sub-divided in a direction transverse to axis of the windings. Fig. 4 shows a shell-type transformer in which groups of high voltage coils 23 .. 31 are interleaved with groups of low voltage coils 14 .. 22, the conductors of each coil being divided in a direction transverse to the axis of the coil into elements insulated from each other throughout the depth of the coil but connected in parallel at the ends. In order to equalize current in the two conductor elements, the latter are transposed in the centre of each coil. Alternatively, transpositions are made between each pair of coils as indicated in Fig. 5 in which the upper conductor element in the upper of a pair of coils is connected to the lower conductor element in the lower coil and vice versa. In another arrangement, Fig. 6, the upper conductor elements are connected in series throughout the whole series of coils, the lower conductor elements being similarly connected, and the two being connected in parallel at the ends of the winding. Thus the conductors are virtually transposed at the centre of the winding since the conductors further from the centre in the upper half of the winding are connected in series with those nearer the centre in the lower half and vice versa. The conductor elements may be taped up in pairs for winding or in groups of more than one pair. Alternatively, conductor elements of special shapes interlocking to form a single rigid conductor with insulation between the elements as shown in Fig. 11 may be used.
