Abstract

368,335. Separating or sorting by weighing. ROCKWARE GLASS SYNDICATE, Ltd. and WARDLEY, T., Rockware Avenue, Greenford, Middlesex. Dec. 1, 1930, No. 36201. [Class 143.] Articles of glassware such as bottles or containers or pressed ware are automatically weighed individually during their conveyance from a forming machine to an annealing lehr and only those articles within a predetermined limit of accuracy as regards weight are allowed to proceed to the lehr. The articles a from a forming machine A are carried by an endless conveyer B towards the lehr C, a weighing apparatus D, which may be similar to that described in Specification 344,676, being interposed. The operating mechanism of the weighing apparatus, comprising suitable gearing for effecting the cycle of operations necessary for weighing each article, is actuated by the article striking a tripper E causing it to move and complete the circuit of a solenoid E<1> operating a single revolution clutch. A camoperated pusher F pushes the article on to a support G, from which it is moved by a pusher H on to the table I carried by a weighing beam I<1>. If the article is of incorrect weight the table moves, operating electrical means, for example as described in Specification 344,676, which enable a solenoid or the like K<1> to move a deflector K across the conveyer. After weighing, the article is pushed on to the conveyer again by a pusher J and, if of the correct weight, is carried on to the lehr, while if too heavy or too light it is deflected by the deflector K. The deflector then returns to its inoperative position. The weighing operation may be carried out while the articles are at a temperature above 500‹ C. and the movement of the table used to give an indication as to whether the article is too heavy or too light, for example by illuminating different coloured lamps, so that the supply of molten glass to the forming machine can be regulated. The support G and table I may be constituted by a number of closely arranged projections to reduce heat transference, and the conveyer B constructed of links with substantially flat tops and spaced, preferably in staggered relation, to provide air spaces. The conveyer may be actuated by a belt, driven by an electric motor through reduction gearing, and passing around an expanding pulley which can be adjusted to vary the speed. The motor gearing and pulley may be mounted on a hinged plate the combined weight of which keeps the belt tensioned.
