Abstract
368,334. Alternating current commutator machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Alexanderson, E. F. W.; 8, Adams Road, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Dec. 1, 1930, No. 36186. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1929. [Class 35.] Brushes, commutators.-In order to reduce sparking by short-circuiting one coil of a lap-winding while the adjacent coil is undergoing commutation without causing overheating when the motor is at rest by short-circuiting more than one coil at a time the brushes are made of such width that they cannot make contact with more than two commutator-bars at once and are unevenly spaced. In the arrangement shown the brushes 17 are shortcircuiting the coils 23, 24 while the coils 20, 26 are undergoing commutation by the brushes 16, and it will be seen that these coils lie in adjacent slots. The spaces between the brushes are of the width of 18¢ and 19¢ commutator bars alternately as shown. It is stated that if the armature voltage per coil while the motor is at rest does not exceed four volts overheating at the brushes will not take place.
