Abstract

368,124. Departure rules &c. LEWIS, E. H., 327, Rielle Avenue, Verdun, Quebec, Canada. April 20, 1931, No. 11659. [Class 97 (ii).] A position and altitude finder comprises a fixed scale and sight, a transverse scale slidable towards and away from the fixed sight, and a movable sight mounted on the transverse scale and adapted to be brought into line with a sighted object. In the form shown, baseboard 15 is horizontally supported on a tripod with three spaced parallel grooves 17, 18, 19 in the board 15 pointing along the ship's course when the instrument is used at sea. A bar 22 which is maintained at right-angles to the groove 17 is provided with runners 24 sliding in the grooves 17, 18, 19. When in its extreme foremost position the bar 22 lies against a stop 20 and its rear edge coincides with the zero of a scale along the groove 17. A sight pin 26 is fixed at the other end of the groove 17 and sight pins 30, 31 are mounted on blocks 28, 29 slidable along a groove in the bar 22. The bar 22 and sliding blocks 28, 29 may be movable by shafts and pinions operated by thumb screws. The distance between the sight 26 and zero mark i of the groove 17 is divided into a percentage scale and a fractional scale. The bar 22 has evenly spaced scales e, f on its back edge and on its top face a scale indicating the percentage by which the distance from the sight 26 to the graduation exceeds the distance between the sight 26 and the zero point i. A vertical graduated post carrying two adjustable sight pins may slide in the groove 17 or may be fixed to the bar 22 and is used for determining altitudes. A scale of angles around the pin 26 may be marked on the board 15. Two observations of a distant object taken with a known displacement of the instrument between the observations enable the distance of the ship from the object and the distances from the object and ship of the foot of the normal from the object on to the ship's course to be determined.
