Abstract
<PICT:0367835/IV/1> <PICT:0367835/IV/2> <PICT:0367835/IV/3> Apparatus for producing staple fibres of artificial silk, of the kind in which the thread is continuously fed in the direction of its length and the end is cut whilst under the action of centrifugal force, comprises a rotatable thread carrier with a central opening and a plurality of passages leading from the opening to the periphery of the carrier, through which opening and any of said passages one or more threads are fed as the carrier rotates. Preferably the passages are equally spaced round the carrier. The carrier may comprise an ordinary centrifugal spinning pot with radial holes near the bottom of its peripheral wall, or two segmental-shaped plates 25, Fig. 2, joined by discs 27 so as to form two radial passages 26 leading to a central opening 28 in the upper disc. The thread 14, Fig. 1, from a viscose pump 10 and coagulating bath 12 is led through a sinker 15 over a guide 16 and one or more godet rollers &c. 17 and through a funnel 18 projecting through the opening 28 into the passages 26. The cutter consists of a blade 29, Fig. 5, of acid resisting material, e.g. stainless steel, positioned by studs 35 between two members 31 with lower portions 34 of triangular cross section held together by a rubber or other resilient ring 36; and the cutter rests on a ledge between upstanding walls in a casting 38 which is formed with a quadrant-shaped shield dipping into water in a trough 42. As the fibres are cut they are washed by jets of water from a nozzle 43 into the trough 42 which may be separate or common to several carriers. The funnel 18 is carried by a hinged cover to a casing surrounding the carrier, an outlet 47 for obnoxious gases and a trough 46 for waste liquid being provided. 11 denotes a waste viscose trough and 13 an overflow receptacle. The feed of the thread may be assisted by a carrier fluid, e.g. by liquid poured into the funnel 18, or by feed rollers mounted on the disc or, in the spinning pot construction of carrier, in the vessel adjacent the passages through its peripheral wall. To vary the length of the cut fibres, more than one cutter may be provided, or the cutter may be withdrawn for one or more revolutions of the carrier, or it may move in or against the direction of rotation of the carrier. Specification 289,028, [Class 31 (i), Cutting and severing machines &c.], is referred to. According to the first Provisional Specification, the cutter may have an oscillating movement, and it may be made of glass or ebonite.
