Abstract

367,404. Tips for legs of furniture. JANTZEN, F., 26, Throggs Neck Boulevard, Bronx, New York, and LYNCH, J., J. 3139, Boulevard, Jersey City, New Jersey, both in U.S.A. Aug. 20, 1930, No. 24886. Convention date, Jan. 7. [Class 134.] A base terminal or shoe for the legs of desks, counters, tables, and other articles of furniture comprises an upper socket for engagement with the furniture leg and a bottom socket in which a cushion block of compacted fabric set on edge is slidably fitted, means being sometimes provided for adjusting the position of the cushion block for varying the effective length of the leg and thus levelling the furniture. The shoe may be of cast bronze and is attached to a hollow metal leg 12, Fig. 2, by means of a split shell 13 inserted in the leg and in the upper socket 17 of the shoe. The shell 13 may be secured in the leg by spot welding and in the socket 17 by friction, cement, or a set-screw 21. The cushion block 22 may be formed of cord fabric vulcanized in rubber. It may be partly encased in a shell 25. The cushion block may be adjustably secured in the lower socket 19 of the shoe by a reversely threaded screw 26 screwing into sockets in the shell 25 and in the partition 20 of the shoe. The screw 26 is turned by means of a tool passing through an opening 30 in the socket 19 and engaging a head 29. The cushion may be formed with a recess 37 and may have tapered sides to interlock in the shell 25. It may be seated in the shell under compression by means of a tapering die 32, Fig. 7, provided with a plunger 36 and adapted to take over-size blocks and compress them into shells 25 fitting into countersunk seats 34 and resting on a support 35. The plunger 36 may act as ejector, or a screw member may be screwed into the socket 28 of the shell 25 for removing it from the die. The screw 26 may be omitted and the shell 25 may seat against the partition 20 or against a filler block between it and the partition 20. The socket 17 may fit directly on to wooden legs. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the cushion may be of various materials and describes the cushion block shown in Figs. 9 (Cancelled) and 10 (Cancelled) as consisting of a moulded body of rubber or rubber composition. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
