Abstract
367,170. Pneumatic separating ; washing granular materials. NORTON, B., Sandford Hall, Claverley, near Wolverhampton, and COLLINS, J. N., 24, Bishop Street, Birmingham. Feb. 12, 1931, No. 4440. [Classes 82 (ii) and 117.] In apparatus for separating granular material, such as the removal of dust from coal, of the kind in which the materials to be separated are passed in cascades over a series of shelves 4, Fig. 2, disposed in an inclined shoot 3 across which an air stream is caused to flow, a series of nozzles 8 with relatively small openings are arranged one in proximity to each cascade so as to subject each to the action of a localized air stream. The nozzles are provided with regulating valves 9 and are connected to a conduit 12 which, in the construction shown, leads to the inlet of a fan 13, Fig. 1, which passes the dust-laden air to a cyclone separator. Alternatively, the nozzles may be connected to the pressure side of the fan. The upper part of the shoot is provided with louvres 7 which are disposed to give the entering air stream an initial downward direction. The louvres are preferably enclosed in a hood 18 which is connected to the output side of the cyclone separator by a pipe 17 so that the air operates in a closed circuit. The shelves 4 are preferably formed with inclined corrugations 6, and may be adjusted either in inclination or position ; they may be vibrated or oscillated either alone or with the shoot as a whole. In the plant shown, the coal or other material leaving the shoot passes to a screen 19 and thence to two washer boxes 20, 21. Specification 20305/89, [Class 117, Sifting &c.], is referred to.
