Abstract

Textile fabrics, felt, straw plait and asbestos fabrics are impregnated and stiffened by treatment with a solution of a completely polymerized styrene or a homologue thereof with or without the addition of a softening agent. Suitable solvents are benzene, toluene or ethyl acetate. Felt may be soaked in a solution of polystyrene in benzene the excess being removed and the felt dried. In examples, (1) a solution of polystyrene in benzene, (2) a solution of polystyrene and tricresyl phosphate in ethyl acetate, (3) a solution of poly-p-ethylstyrene in toluene and methylene chloride and (4) a solution of a -polymethylstyrene in carbon tetrachloride are used as stiffenings. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to the impregnation of paper and to the use of derivatives of polystyrene as impregnating agents; in examples, polystyrene chlorinated in the nucleus and dissolved in a mixture of methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, and phthalic acid dibutyl ester or hexahydropolystyrene dissolved in a mixture of benzene and toluene are used as impregnating agents. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Textile fabrics, felt, straw plait and asbestos fabrics are impregnated and stiffened by treatment with a solution of a completely polymerized styrene or a homologue thereof with or without the addition of a softening agent.
