Abstract

366,450. Helicopters ; screw propellers. HOWARD, F. A., 183, Stiles Street, Elizabeth, New Jersey, U.S.A. July 30, 1930, No. 23041. Convention date, July 31, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Classes 4 and 114.] The Specification as open to inspection describes a turbo-propeller in which a series of combustion chambers' are formed on the rim around the blades of a propeller. Fuel and air for combustion are supplied by way of a hollow shaft and through the hollow blades. In a modified arrangement, as shown in the Figure, the combustion chambers 1 are situated near the axis of the rotor. Exhaust gases pass to the tips of the blades through tubes 88 which may form the leading and trailing edges of the blades. A turbo-propeller mounted on a shaft of an aircraft may have a thrust line which is adjustable as the shaft is mounted on a swivel joint. In a helicopter, the turbo-propeller is mounted on a vertical shaft which swivels about a central joint. A brake shoe is provided for the shaft.
