Abstract

365,692. Washing dishes, plates, pots, pans, &c. STIRRAT, G., 9, Lynedoch Street, Greenock. Nov. 10, 1930, No. 33764. [Class 138 (i).] The apparatus comprises two or more rotary brushes 3 mounted on hollow spindles 4, 5, 6 for delivery of water. The bristles of any two brushes intermesh or come sufficiently close to engage both sides of a plate or similar article inserted between the brushes. The drawing shows three different spindle arrangements. The spindle 4 has a detachable screw coupling to a feed pipe 7 passing through a gland 8 in the bottom 9 of a tub or sink. The gland also serves to support a gear case 10 from the underside of the tub &c. The spindle 5 is detachably connected to a solid shaft 11 also passing through a gland on which is screwed a hollow T piece 12 having a branch 12a for connection to a pump &c. The spindle 6 is attached to a feed pipe 7 similarly to the first. The feed pipes 7 and shaft 11 are rotated as by worm wheels 13 connected to a shaft 14. In practice, the spindles and water supply attachments would be uniform. As shown with spindles 5, 6 each, has holes 15 registering with passages 16 in the brush stock 17 whereby water is supplied to the bristles. Spindles 4, 6 can be detached and the open ends of the supply pipes closed by plugs as required. The spindle 4 contains a hollow spindle 18 which projects upwards and above the brush 3 and a space between the two spindles provides for the supply of water to the brush holes 15. The spindle has means whereby it rotates with the spindle 4 and is pressed upwards by a spring (not shown). The lower end of the spindle 18 works through a valve seat 19 which co-operates with a valve member 20 carried by webs 20a. When the spindle is depressed as in the Figure, the water passes to the brush. When the brush is removed water supply to the open end 18a is cut off by the valve member 20 seating against the member 19. The spindle 5 has a perforated valve seat 19 through which works a hollow valve spindle 18 pressed upwards by a spring 21. Valve ports 23 in the lower end of the valve spindle open into a chamber 24 in the outer spindle 5 below the valve seat. The chamber 24 is always open to the T piece 12. Keys 25 on the spindle 18 allow the valve spindle to rotate and also to move axially. A cap 29 closes the upper end of the spindle 5 and a cleaning appliance 28 is screwed or detachably connected to the upper open end of the spindle 18. The bristles are preferably arranged in oblique or spiral rows with spaces between the rows so that the brushes can intermesh.
