Abstract

365,562. Sheet folding and associating apparatus. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO., 1535, South Paulina Street, Chicago, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Seymour, M. F. ; Short Hills, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Oct. 17, 1930, No. 31129. Convention date, Nov. 5, 1929. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] In folding-mechanism of the kind in which folding-blades 27, 28, 29 on a cylinder 14 are operated by a rotating slotted disc 83 engaging arms 67, 68, 69 thereon so as to tuck the sheets between folding-rollers 33, 34, the disc is movably axially to an inoperative position and is replaced by a guide 113 completing the usual circular track 77 so that the folding-blades operate at intervals of more than one revolution of the cylinder 14 to fold off sheets which have been collected thereon. In the arrangement shown the blades are operated at alternate revolutions to fold off pairs of sheets collected on the cylinder. The disc 83 is fixed to a gear 89 meshing with a broad gear 106 on the shaft 18 of the cylinder 14, and its shaft 90 is movable endwise in the side frame 19 of the machine by means of a slidable bracket 104 engaging a collar 105 thereon. Fixed to the bracket 104 is a guide 113 which, when the disc 83 is moved axially to inoperative position, moves into position to fill the gap in the track 77 adjacent to the folding position. The bracket 104 is moved at the required periods by a grooved cam 131 rotated by gearing 144, 143 from the shaft 18, a pin 133 riding in the cam groove being mounted on a sliding bar 127 connected by a link 125 and bell-crank lever 124 to the bracket. The collecting pins 43, 44, 45 corresponding to the blades 27, 28, 29 are operated by rollers 58, 59, 60 carried by crank arms 55, 56, 57 and running in a cam groove 159 in the usual way. The part 171 of the groove 159 operating to retract the pins when the sheets carried thereby are being folded off is formed on a slidable block 167, which also has an arc-shaped groove 170 adapted to replace the part 171 during the cylinder revolution when the pins are collecting and therefore are not retracted, the corresponding folding- blade being also inoperative. The block 167 is operated from a suitably designed grooved cam disc 178 through a bell-crank lever 175, the disc being driven from the shaft 18 similarly to the disc 131. Specification 15435/01, [Class 100, Printing, Letterpress &c.], is referred to.
