Abstract

365,457. Surgical appliances. HÍFLINGER, B., 6, Weberstrasse, Riga, Latvia. May 16, 1931, No. 14512. [Class 81 (ii).] An appliance for restricting the flow of blood and producing an accumulation thereof at any point in the body comprises a rigid or semirigid casing or jacket a, Fig. 2, for example of fabric-reinforced rubber, having within it a number of inflatable pockets bl .. b<4>, preferably formed of flat-section rubber tubing, so arranged as to form a continuous surface. The pockets are connected by tubes f<1> .. f<4>, arranged between the pockets and the jacket to a source of compressed gas or liquid, for example, a carbon-dioxide cartridge or a rubber pressure bulb. In use the appliance is applied to the part to be treated and the pockets inflated in succession by control valves or other means connected to the tubes f<1> .. f<4>. To increase the effect all the pockets except the last may be deflated and reinflated in succession. A suitable pressure-controlling device comprises a cylinder 5, Fig. 4, having a piston 3, a nozzle 5a connected to the pressure source, and lateral nozzles 2 connected to the tubes f<1> .. f<4>. The piston 3 has a piston-rod 6 the head 4 of which is normally secured as by a bayonet joint 8. On release of the head 4 the piston is moved out by the compressed fluid and uncovers the nozzles 2 in succession.
