Abstract
365,088. Ball bearings. ROBERTSON, R. and KAPELLA, Ltd., 104, Stoughton Street, Leicester. Oct. 10, 1930, Nos. 30324/30 and 21622/31. [Class 12 (i).] The tool-spindle A of a drilling, milling, engraving, or like machine of the kind having ball bearings adapted to withstand radial and axial thrust is rotatably mounted in a quill B by means of the bearings shown. The inner races G, H are formed in the spindle itself and the outer race I, adjacent the recess F in the spindle which receives the tool, is secured by a screwed ring K whilst the outer race J is pressed upwards by a spring L engaging an annular shoulder M in the quill. The inner races G, H are of part circular section, as shown, and the outer races I, J of conical formation. The conical surfaces of the races I, J preferably face outwards from each other, as shown, and the upper race J may be fixed whilst the race I is axially movable. Dirt is excluded from the quill by an upper cap 0 and by a driving pulley D fixed to the lower end of the spindle A. In assembling, the spring L and the races I, J are inserted in the quill, the spindle A is then introduced and the balls placed in the upper bearing. The spindle is then pressed downwards, against the spring L, until the balls can be placed in the lower bearing, whereupon the ring K, cap 0, and pulley D are attached.
