Abstract
To prevent sedimentation and gelatinization of solutions of naphthenate, linoleate, and resinate driers in volatile organic solvents, olefinic or aromatic carboxylic acids are added to the solutions. Acids specified are the free fatty acids of drying and semi-drying oils (including linoleic acid and perillic acid), crotonic acid, phthalic acid, benzoic acid and its homologues and derivatives having a free carboxyl group in the nucleus or side-chain, such as o, m, and p amino-, chloro-, and nitro-benzoic acids and hippuric acid. Free benzoic acid also accelerates the dissolving of the drier, and reliquefies thickened drier solutions and gelatinized lacquers. The quantity of fatty acid required may be, for example, from 3 to 20 per cent of the solid drier, and smaller amounts of benzoic acid, down to one-fourth, may be used. In examples the materials used are (1) cobalt naphthenate dissolved in lacquer benzine with or without carbon tetrachloride or other chlorinated hydrocarbon, and the fatty acids of soya bean oil; (2) cobalt-lead resinate, volatile solvents, and linoleic acid; (3) zinc and cobalt naphthenates, mixed terpenes, benzole and perillic acid; (4) cobalt napthenate, lacquer benzine or other solvent; and benzoic acid, (5) manganese linoleate, sangajol (a petroleum fraction boiling from 150 DEG -190 DEG C.), and o-aminobenzoic acid; (6) cobalt-zinc resinate, turpentine, and phthalic acid; (7) cobalt-manganese naphthenate, benzaldehyde (which becomes converted into benzoic acid), and hippuric acid, mixed terpenes and benzole.
