[Class 78 (v).] In winding gear for deep shafts the driving motors a, bare arranged low down near the mouth of the shaft and the hoisting ropes c .. f are trained substantially vertically therefrom over pulleys i, g at the top of the framework of the gear to eliminate the whipping which occurs when inclined ropes are used. In the form: shown in Fig.. 1 the sections c, d and e, f are equally inclined at a small angle to the vertical. In a modified construction, Fig. 6, the driving wheels are arranged at rightangles to the direction in which they are shown in Fig. 1 and the members of each pair of pulleys i, g are inclined to each other so that their edges g<1>, i<1> are exactly vertically over the edges of the driving wheels.
