Abstract

364,218. Aircraft wheel-braking systems. STEVENS, H. L., Royal Air Force, Martlesham Heath, Woodbridge, Suffolk. Oct. 21, 1930, No. 31527. [Class 4.] -A device for controlling port and starboard brakes on an aircraft simultaneously or independently is mounted on the aircraft rudder bar in such a manner that in one position of the device relative to the rudder bar movement of the latter does not apply the brakes and in one or more other positions of the device relative to the rudder bar movement of the latter causes differential application of the brakes. The rudder bar 3, Fig. 1, is pivoted at 18 and carries a dummy rudder bar 1 capable of sliding movement on guides 2 against the resistance of springs 5. A lever 8 fixed to the bar 1 is connected at 13 to port and starboard brake control cables or rods 9, 10 through the intermediary of spaced rocking levers 14, 15. The axis 18 of the rudder bar 3 passes through point 13 so that in the position shown rocking of the rudder bar does not cause application of the brakes. The bar 1 may be moved bodily towards the bar 3 by pressure on its foot rests 4 and can be locked in this position to apply both brakes equally by Bowden mechanism actuating detents 6 on the bar 1 adapted to engage in holes 7 on the guides 2. The bar may, similarly, be locked in the outer " off " position. In this position rocking of the rudder bar to one side or the other, Fig. 3, causes differential application of the brakes. The control cables may incorporate resilient means at points along their lengths. In an application to fluid pressure operated brakes, Fig. 5, the levers 14, 15 are connected to the piston rods of port and starboard brake control pistons. The guide rods 2 are a loose fit in the holes in the bar 1 so that pressure on one pedal tilts the rudder bar to apply one brake only.
