Abstract
In the dehydration of alcohols by lime, absolute alcohol and substantially completely hydrated lime powder are obtained simultaneously by using only 5-20 per cent excess of lime and agitating continuously throughout both the refluxing and the distilling off of the alcohol. The residual lime may be completely hydrated by addition of the calculated quantity of water. In an example, 2000 lb. of 92 per cent ethyl alcohol and 600 lb. of granular 95 per cent lime are refluxed for 4-6 hours, using a horizontal steam-jacketed still provided with a horizontal agitator, and the alcohol then distilled off; 1830 lb. of alcohol containing less than 0,10 per cent of water are obtained. 25 lb. of water are added to the hot powder in the still and agitated therewith until hydration is complete; 790 lb. of dust-like hydrated lime results.ALSO:In the dehydration of alcohols by lime, absolute alcohol and substantially completely hydrated lime powder are obtained simultaneously by using only 5-20 per cent excess of lime and agitating continuously throughout both the refluxing and the distilling off of the alcohol. An example is given.
