[Class 82 (ii).] In apparatus for pickling tubes, bars, rods or the like comprising one or more tanks containing pickling solution through which pass sprocket chains on which the articles are placed so that they receive a tumbling or rolling motion, means independent of the chains are provided for placing the articles on and removing them from the chains. In the form shown in Fig. 2 two tanks 11 are provided, situated between supporting columns 12, 13 and 13, 14. Sprocket chains 10 of sufficient length to form loops 10a, 10b in or above the liquid in the tanks 11 are secured at their ends to brackets on the columns 12, 14, the connections being adjustable so that the lengths of the chains may be altered, and pass over sprocket wheels 15 on a shaft 16 journalled in brackets on the column 13. The sprocket wheels 15 are rotated first in one direction and then in the other so that the chains are alternately raised and lowered in the pickling liquid, the articles thus receiving a tumbling or rolling motion. The lengths of the chains may be adjusted so that the articles are held at an angle to the horizontal and mechanically operated slings 17 are provided for placing the articles on and removing them from the chains. In the form shown in Fig. 3 one tank 18 and endless sprocket chains 23 which are driven continuously in one direction and may have lugs 26 to increase the tumbling or rolling of the articles, are used. The slings 17 may be arranged in varying lengths so that the articles held thereby are inclined to the horizontal, thus facilitating drainage on removal of the articles from the tank.
