363,604. Ball or tube mills for producing metal foil. HARTSTOFFMETALL AKT.-GES., 39, Kaiser Wilhelm Strasse, C÷penick, Berlin. May 13, 1931, No. 14180. Convention date, May 16, 1930. [Class 59.] A method of producing "bronze colours" when subjecting metal particles to the hammering action of the balls in a ball mill consists in the employment of a number of balls sufficient to occupy, when evenly distributed in the stationary drum, a segmental portion of the drum having a radial height varying between two-fifths and five-sixths of the radius of the drum. In Fig. 1, the ordinates represent the yield in kilograms and the abscissa indicates the weight of steel balls employed in kilograms per metre of length of the drum. Normally the mill was worked under the conditions indicated by the first maximum A and now the mill is to be worked under the conditions indicated by the maximum B. In practice the mill contains balls to the height of two-thirds to five-sixths of the radius of the drum. The apparatus for carrying out the method consists of a drum 12 containing loose balls 15 into which metal particles are fed by a hopper 1 and conveyer 2. The flattened particles are blown out of the drum by a fan into an air separator 19 and thence into a cyclone 14, the dustfree air or inert gas being drawn out of the cyclone by the fan 6 through a pipe 22. The coarse particles separated out in the sifter 19 being returned to the mill through a rotary valve 23. Fat or oil for lubricating the foil is injected into the mill through a pipe 11.
