[Classes 6 (i) and 6 (iii).] A tilling-machine which may be converted for excavating and loading soil and for mowing crops, and which forms a modification of the machine described in Specification 315,678, [Class 6 (i), Cultivating implements &c.], comprises a wheeled framework 1 having a rear travelling and pulverizing wheel or roller 8, a quadrant or roller 9 coacting with the rear pulverizing roller 8, a ploughing or digging plate or share 3, an inclined plate or conveyer 7 for delivering the soil from the share to the pulverizing rollers, a harrow 11 for harrowing the subsoil, a levelling rake or scraper 12, and a detachable rear frame 13 on which soilinverting plates or implements for drilling seeds, distributing manure, &c. may be mounted. The machine may be propelled by an engine mounted on it, or may be drawn by horses or a tractor. Front steering wheels, rollers, or castors 2 may be provided, or the front of the frame 1 may be connected to a tractor. The curved plate or share 3 may have a sharp or serrated edge and is provided with vertical coulters 5. It is carried by pivoted arms 4 adjustable by means of rack and pinion mechanism 6 and a retaining pin. The share 3 may be mounted in grooves in the arms 4, with springs between it and a cross-piece. A stiff draw-bar or polepiece may be provided to allow of the machine being backed by a tractor. The conveyer 7 may be of endless-band or roller type. The roller or rollers 8 may have plain, notched, or grooved surfaces, or the surfaces may consist of transverse slats which may be attached by screws or threaded on to a chain, band, or wire, or of curved corrugated plates attached to plain rollers. The slatted roller 8 shown is of open cage-like construction. The smaller pulverizing roller 9 is mounted in spring- controlled pivoted brackets 10; or it may be mounted on a spindle on the main frame, the spring action being obtained by mounting the roller on spiral spring spokes. It may be replaced by a hinged quadrant-shaped plate provided with transverse bars or grooves. A grid and box 7A may be provided to catch falling stones. The subsoil harrow 11 is adjustably secured to the frame 1 or to the pivoted arms 4. The tines are adjustably secured on a transverse bar. They may be grooved or ridged to fit corresponding ridges or grooves on the transverse bar, being secured by bolts, nuts, and washers. The harrow 11 and the rake 12 may be raised out of action by means of levers 11A, 12A. A curved plate may be provided to carry the soil from the inclined plate 7 over the roller 8 to inverting plates, which may consist of curved shelflike plates fixed at an angle to the ground, or mounted on an axle which rotates as the soil falls on the plates. Seeds &c. sown by apparatus carried by the frame 13 may be rolled or harrowed by a roller or harrow connected to the frame 13. Excavated soil may be delivered over the roller 8 into a wagon or into a receptacle on the frame 13. For mowing crops a mowing bar or knife may be carried by two extension pieces carried forward in front of the wheels 2 from the pivoted arms 4 as indicated in broken lines, the share 3 being removed. The knife may be driven from a motor or from the rear roller.
