[Class 18.] A match box or a cover or holder for the outer or inner member thereof is provided with means for the insertion and securing of an ignited match &c. within the box, cover or member, apertures through which access may be had or air pass to the flame of the match &c. and funnel-shaped, inclined or tapered deflectors for the diversion or concentration of the flame or burning fuses. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the usual match box m or the inner member thereof is provided with a cover a having openings b to expose the striking surfaces of the box. The openings b are extended to form tapered recesses c in which an ignited match stick e may be held with the ignited head disposed in the space formed by a partial withdrawal of the box from the cover and protected from wind etc.; an opening g having funnel-shaped edges j causes the burning gases to be concentrated for use in lighting a pipe, cigarette, &c. An opening d also gives access to the flame and permits air to enter the combustion space ; and the recesses c may be arranged to extend from the opening g or may be replaced by a clip or spring. The cover or outer member a may be longer than the match box or inner member so that a combustion space is provided without partly withdrawing the inner member. In another form, Fig. 6, the cover or outer member r has a hinged lid k which, in the open inclined position, serves to deflect or concentrate the burning gases from a match stick held in jaws m extending from an opening o; an additional opening may be provided which is closed by a lip p on the lid which may also be provided with side flanges or windguards v and with a funnel-shaped opening. Additional holes or slots may also be provided for allowing air to enter or gases to escape from the combustion space and such holes or openings may be shaped to give an upward direction to the air entering the combustion space and a tendency for the flame &c. to be drawn upwards. In a further form, Fig. 9, the combustion space C forms a compartment in the inner member L of a match box, the matches being held in the other compartment K. The ignited match is held in jaws B extending from an opening A and the burning gases are deflected by a member D ; the cigarette &c. is held in the opening F which may be funnel-shaped, in which case the member D may be dispensed with. The member L may be provided with a sliding or hinged lid instead of a sliding outer cover.
