Abstract
In the condensation of aldehydes to esters using an aluminium alcoholate as condensing agent, the reaction including the combination of aluminium and an alcohol to form the alcoholate is initiated in the presence of a preformed alcoholate free from halogeniferous or other auxiliary substances as catalyst, whilst excluding auxiliary substances such as halogen compounds from the reaction. Advantageously butyl alcohol may be used for the preparation of the alcoholate. The aluminium alcoholate, especially when using the butylate, may be employed for the condensation in the form of a suspension in excess of alcohol. When the aldehyde treated is acetaldehyde, and the alcoholate is employed suspended in butyl alcohol a partial conversion of the ethyl acetate formed into butyl acetate takes place. In an example, sheet aluminium shavings are added to preformed aluminium butylate free from auxiliary substances, the crystal paste is heated to melting, butanol is added gradually while heating, and, after cooling and setting aside a portion of the butylate for the next operation, acetaldehyde is added gradually while stirring and cooling and the mixture allowed to stand for 12 hours, whereby a mixture of ethyl and butyl acetates, ethyl alcohol and unchanged butyl alcohol is obtained, and separated by distillation or other known means.
