Abstract

<PICT:0362418/IV/1> <PICT:0362418/IV/2> <PICT:0362418/IV/3> Apparatus for swelling and stretching artificia silk, yarn, bands, films, &c. comprises a trough for the swelling liquid having thread inlets and outlets on opposite sides offset relatively to one another so that the threads &c. run obliquely thereby providing sufficient length for the threads &c. without unduly increasing the size of the trough. Preferably a guide channel is provided for each thread &c. and swelling liquid is admitted at the entrance of each channel. The trough is provided with a water jacket to control the temperature. Thread guides are arranged at the entrance and exit of each channel. For stretch spinning, the entrance guides are replaced by spinning nozzles. As shown, a trough 3, supported within a casing 2 forming a water jacket, is furnished with oblique channels formed of overlapping angle-irons 6 riveted together. Swelling liquid is supplied to each channel by a pipe 9, the pipes 9 being connected to a branch pipe 10 supplied from a main 11. The liquid escapes by a pipe 12 and may be returned to the main 11 after regeneration. Attemperating liquid is circulated in the jacket through pipes 4, 5. Threads fed by rollers 15 are passed through guides 13, 14 and over a stretching-roller 17, which is preferred to pressing rolls to avoid flattening. In starting up, the threads are attached to guides 25 carried at the lower ends of thread drawers 22 which are furnished with cylindrical heads pivotally supported in spring clips 23 secured to a rail 20 adapted to be traversed along guides. The rail 20 is moved in one direction by a cam and traction bands in such a manner as to impart accelerated movement to the guides 25. At the end of this movement the guides 25 are detached and passed through the guides 14 and the threads are passed over the roller 17. Fig. 6 shows an adjustable cam comprising a steel band 32 carried by struts 34 adjustably secured by screws 35 to a cruciform member 36. Fig. 4 shows a modified form of channel wherein the vertical walls 8 of the plates 6 have bent-over portions forming guides for the thread guides 25.
