Abstract

Impregnating and adhesive compositions are made by heating asphaltic material such as asphalt, coal-tar or pitch, petroleum pitch, naphthol pitch or stearine pitch with one or more vegetable or animal fatty materials such as rapeseed, sesam<\>ae, castor or train oil preferably with the addition of resins, in the presence of oxygen or gases or gaseous compounds containing oxygen such as oxides of nitrogen, preferably to a temperature above the boiling point of water, for example 130 DEG C. to 220 DEG C., while avoiding substantial removal of organic materials by working for example in a closed vessel, under reflux, or at temperatures of about 130 DEG C. The resins, which may be added before, during or after the oxidation, comprise natural resins such as crude turpentine and colophony or artificial resins such as coumarone resins or phenolaldehyde condensation products. Oxidation catalysts such as the barium, cobalt, nickel and manganese salts of naphthenic, cinnamic or resinic acids may be added. Materials such as rubber and polymerization products of diolefines or fillers such as kieselguhr, wood particles, textile or asbestos fibres may be added before or after the oxidation. The oxidizing gas is preferably supplied in a fine dispersion, for example by passing it through sieves, baffle-plates, porous plates or filters and the reaction material may be stirred. A waterproof material for sacks is made by joining paper to jute by means of the adhesive, or materials such as jute, linen, cotton, paper, paste-board or asbestos board may be impregnated with the composition and then combined.
