Abstract
361,950. Boot making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., Union Works, Belgrave Road, Leicester. July 31, 1930, No. 23058. [Classes 17 (i) and 112.] Trimming; boot-sole sewing-machines.-Relates to shoe manufacture bv machines wherein an operation is performed progressively along the sole margin of a jacked shoe during the relative traverse of a tool and the shoe, the relative tipping of the shoe and tool being mechanically controlled during such traverse, and consists in guiding the work by a templet in predetermined position with respect to the shoe, positioning means being provided at predetermined locations on the shoe. The operation may be trimming, in which case the trimmed edge may serve as a guide for the seam securing the outsole to the welt. An appliance is described for marking the sole for positioning the templet. This appliance comprises a plate 32, Fig. 11, secured to a fixed support 38 and formed with a guideway for a sole pricking pin 40 actuated by a lever 42 slotted at its free end to engage a pin 24 engaging a hole in the last as described in Specification 206,176, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.]. The shoe is engaged at the sides of the toe by rolls 46 on arms pivoted to the plate 32, geared together and urged together by a spring. An adjustable toe gauge 44 is provided, and a spring plate 56. The templet 20, Fig. 4, has a locating pin at its forward end to engage the depression formed by the pin 40, and a slot at its rear end to engage the pin 24. The shoe is mounted on a jack of the kind described in Specification 324,367, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.], provided with an arm 90 pivoted to the lower portion of the heel support 60 and carrying a clamp for the templet. This comprises a ball-jointed presser foot 86 on a plunger having a pin 96 engaging a cam track in a clamping lever 92. The jack is actuated and controlled as described in Specification 324,367, and, as the shoe is unclamped at the conclusion of the cycle the slight downward movement of the shoe releases the pressure of the foot 86 and allows the lever 90 to fall away from the shoe. The templet 20 is engaged by a guide 108, Fig. 4, secured to the exhaust nozzle 112 for removing chips and apertured for the passage of the cutter 100, which is mounted on the shaft of an electric motor 106. A gauge and guard plate 104 is secured to the cutter shaft and engages the crease between the upper and welt to determine the vertical position of the shoe. The trimmed edge may be used to guide the shoe in an automatic outsole sewing-machine of the kind described in Specifications 114,842 or 292,193, [both in Class 112, Sewing &c.]. The work table 120, Fig. 15, entering the crease is provided with an edge gauge 124. The shoe sole edge may then be finally trimmed in a machine of the kind used for the rough rounding, fitted with the same or a different templet.
