Abstract

361,818. Catheters. DOW, M. F., 18, Kidderpore Gardens, Hampstead, London. May 28, 1931, No. 15686. [Class 81 (ii).] A flexible catheter 1, Fig 1, is formed at its end with a shaped-away portion as at 3 opposite the usual aperture 2 in order to reduce the part within the bladder. The catheter is preferably em ployed with a guide tube 8 Fig. 2, attached by studs 9 .to a pad 7 carried by ar elastic belt 10 and may initially be formed of curved shape as at 1<1> in order tc secure close contact with the abdominal wall 6 and thereby reduce leakage. Ir addition or alternatively the catheter may be former with a bulged portion 12 close to the wall of the bladder or within the abdominal wall. The curved and bulged catheter may be made by inserting a deformable wire into the straight tube, doubling the tube and wire back upon themselves, coiling the tube around the doubled-back portion and " setting " the catheter as by boiling. To prevent movement of the pad 7 a rigid bar 13, Fig. 5, or a pair of such bars is or are detachably connected to the studs 9; the bar may be cut away as at 14 to prevent interference with other surgical appliances, for example a truss. The free end of the catheter may be closed, when the receptacle commonly employed is detached, by a hollow glass stopper or by a transparent rubber cap attached to a beaded vulcanite tube, thus permitting the necessity for the re-attachment of the receptacle to be observed.
