Abstract

361,337. Vehicle brakes and jacking attachments. SILVA, A. A., 96, Brownrigg Street, Kandy, Ceylon. June 18, 1930, No. 18563. [Class 103 (i).] A brake device for vehicles comprises a number of legs or drags hinged to the axles or other part, normally held in the raised position by a catch device which is adapted to be released by the driver or by collision with a buffer by a person or object on the track to lower the legs and thus raise the vehicle so that it skids along on the drags. The drags may also serve for jacking up the vehicle for repairs. Legs or drags 1, 2, 3 hinged to the front and rear axles by brackets 20 are connected together by rods 4, 5 pivoted thereto. The front drag has a hook 12 normally engaging a tongue 11 on a rotatable shaft 14 mounted in bearings on the springs of the vehicle whereby the drags are held in the raised position. A buffer 17 is secured by arms 10 to the shaft 14. Coil springs 16 on the shaft support the buffer in the raised position and hold the tongue 11 in engagement with the hook 12. A pedal 8 is connected by a rod 9 to one of the buffer arms 10. The catch 11, 12 may thus be disengaged either by operating the pedal 8 or by contact of the buffer with a person or object on the track, so as to cause the drags to fall, assisted by a spring 6, and the vehicle to be lifted and stopped thereby. The lower ends of the drags are curved as shown in Fig. 4, the radius of curvature at the rear part that first contacts with the ground being the same as that of the wheel and increasing towards the front so that the vehicle is gradually raised. The drags may be made of T-section bar and be shod with hard corrugated rubber. The drags are returned to the raised position after use by a hand-lever 7 connected to the rods 4, 5.
