Abstract
360,950. Propellent explosives ; gun cartridges. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.; Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A.) Aug. 9, 1930, No. 23918. [Classes 9 (i), 9 (ii), and 92 (ii).] Part of the amount of flash-preventing material is mixed with a propellent explosive, and the remainder is added to the charge in the gun separately, either by itself or after incorporation with a colloided cellulose ester. In an example, the explosive contains 85 parts of nitrocellulose, 10 parts of dinitrotoluene, 5 parts of dibutylphthalate, 1 part of diphenylamine, and 1/3 to ¢ part of potassium sulphate; the extra amount of potassium sulphate required to make the explosive flashless is added separately in silk or other containers, or after incorporation with an equal amount of colloided nitrocellulose. It is stated that the flash from a smallarm is prevented by firing the gun in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide.
