Abstract

360,839. Leather silcking machines. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Machinery Development Co. ; 447, Virginia Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A.) May 29, 1930, No. 16597. [Class 76.] A plant for setting out hides on slicking boards comprises a table or tables on which the hides are set out by a tool which operates on the face of a hide in two directions at right-angles, the arrangement being such that a hide is slicked from the centre outwards on each side of the centre line and the operations are then repeated in the direction at right-angles to the first. An operator at a table 20 places the hide upon a board which is then fed to a table 21 where the operation described is performed by the action of a rotary tool 26 which is traversed over the hide while between its strokes the table with the hide thereon is lowered and rotated. The board with the hide slicked upon it is then fed to a table 22 where it is reversed by hand and a hide placed upon its other face to be treated similarly on a table 23 from which it is fed to a table 24 for final manual treatment. The tools 26 are mounted on carriages 30, traversed in slideways on the frame and each is driven by a belt 39, passing round a pulley 36 on the shaft of the tool, pulleys 34, 35 carried by the slide and pulleys 37, 38 on the frame. The two pulleys are driven by belt connections from the shaft of an electromotor 40. The carriages 30 are formed with racks 50 which mesh with gears 51 driven in opposite senses alternately to traverse the carriages to and fro. The mechanism for effecting this includes a bevel gear driven through reduction gearing from the motor and continuously in mesh with bevel gears 57, 58 freely mounted on the shaft 52 of the gears 51. A clutch 61 splined on the shaft 52 is moved by a shifter mechanism actuated by one of a pair of cams 70 to engage the bevel gears 57, 58 alternately. The cams 70 actuate rack bars which mesh with segmental racks 97 connected by links 94 to the upper ends of the limbs of a yoke on which a lower bearing for a rotatable table 21, 23 is supported, so that on the intermittent actuation of the racks the table is raised or lowered. The table has a tubular portion 77 formed with extended gear teeth meshing with a rack which is actuated at intervals by a cam to rotate the table. The tool and table actuating mechanism co-operate as follows. The table with a hide thereon is raised to clamp the hide against a clamp bar 25, the tool moves forward from the bar to set out half the hide, the table is lowered and rotated 180‹, raised, and the other half of the hide is engaged by the tool, the table is again lowered, rotated a quarter turn forward, and raised to the tool operates in a direction along the hide at right-angles to the first. The table is then lowered and given a half turn backward and again raised to operating position. Finally it is lowered and given a quarter turn backward and is ready for the next hide. Mechanism is provided for feeding the hides forward from table to table comprising fingers 134 which work through slots 130 in the tables and are carried by frames 131 connected by bars 132 to form a unit which is supported by rollers on tracks 136 which are intermittently raised or lowered. The carrier unit is reciprocated at times when the fingers are above or below the tables and its tracks are raised and lowered by cam mechanism, the parts being so arranged that the fingers rise through the slots of one table carrying the board and the hide thereon, and move along till they are above the slots in the adjacent table through which they pass down to return to their original position.
