Abstract
Gases escaping from the absorption columns for nitric acid produced by oxidation of ammonia under pressure are heated to such a temperature that they can be expanded in expansion machines without their condensation point being reached. Since no acid liquor condenses, the expansion can take place in centrifugal machines made of ordinary materials, provided with outside bearings to avoid contact of the gases with lubricating oil. The heating may be effected indirectly as with steam, or preferably directly by the combustion in the gas of a liquid or gaseous fuel. In an example, the moist gases at a pressure of 7 kilos and containing 3.5 per cent oxygen and 0,15 per cent nitrogen oxides are dried and heated under pressure to about 450 DEG C. by atomized oil, introduced by a pump without primary air or atomizing steam. The hot combustion gases pass to a regenerating turbine.
