Non-aqueous preparations to be sprayed for killing flies in rooms and stables consist of a hydrocarbon, such as a petroleum distillate boiling between 200 DEG -260 DEG C., mixed with a compound of the general formula Ar.COO.X, wherein Ar stands for a phenyl residue which may contain one or more substituents, and X stands for an alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl residue. Active substances definitely specified are benzoic acid benzyl ester, and the ethyl-, amyl-, phenyl-, and benzylesters of chlorbenzoic, salicylic, or chloro-hydroxyphenyl-carboxylic acids. Insecticides comprising a petroleum distillate containing pyrethrum extract are referred to.
