Abstract
360,562. Postmarking -machines. NICOHOSOFF, E., 5, Rue Fouad 1er, Alexandria, Egypt. Sept. 9, 1930, No. 26973. [Class 100 (ii).] In a postmarking-machine, the letters &e. are fed between a set of endless bands and a number of coacting pressure rollers and printing is effected through an ink-ribbon by means of a stamping- block carried by a reciprocating arm and coacting with a stationary platen. The machine may be used for stamping the envelopes or wrappers described in Specification 360,112. Two or more stamping-blocks may be provided operating simultaneously or in succession, and a number of machines may be operated from the same drive. It is stated that in addition to the printed impression on the cover, visible impression is produced on the contents. As shown, a series of feed bands 9 passing around grooved vertical rollers 10, 11 coact with pressure rollers 58 to feed letters 62, pressed by hand against the bands, through the machine: the bands 9 are driven by the roller 11, which is rotated by gearing from a main shaft 4, and the axles of the rollers 58 are arranged in guide slots in a frame 59 under the influence of springs 60. The printing-device consists of a block 23 carried by an arm 20, which is pivoted at 22 inside a gear casing 1 and extends through a slot in a top plate 3 : the arm 20, which is guided by brackets 21 and normally rests against an inclined support 32, is rocked against spring action, so as to provide a rapid succession of impression blows, by means of a rotary escapement wheel 28 engaging a projection 27 on the end of the arm. The letters are supported during printing by a buffer 16 arranged below the bands 9 and adjusted into alignment with the bands by turning a nut 18 engaging a screw thread on a rod 17 fixed to the buffer. The face of the block 16 is slightly inclined to the vertical and the face of the printing-block 23 is correspondingly inclined. Printing is effected through an inkribbon 35 carried by spools 38, 38<1> and passed over tensioning-rollers 39 and guide-rollers 36. A pair of bevel gears fixed to a tubular member slidably mounted on a rotary shaft may be shifted., by means of a hand lever 56, to move either of the gears into engagement with a gear on one of the spools whereby the ribbon may be fed in either direction ; alternatively, an automatic reversing- mechanism may be employed. Printing-surfaces.-The printing-block 23 comprises a permanent part surrounding an inner cylindrical exchangeable part, the latter being placed in position from the back of the block so that recesses in the inner part engage projections on the outer part: a pivoted cover plate engaging the back of the inner part holds it in position.
