Abstract

360,272. Treating sewage. SCHIMRIGK, F., 20, Lassenstrasse, Weimar, Germany. Jan. 16, 1931, No. 1477. [Class 111.] In a plant for the biological purification of sewage employing movable bodies on which the organisms can settle, the bodies, which may be heavier or lighter than the liquid, are moved about to keep them clean by air or water currents or mechanical means. The agitating means may be operated continuously or intermittently. Air, for instance, may be introduced by means of a fan which is brought into and out of action by an electrical time switch. The bodies may be of light coke, slag, wood, pumice, pumice concrete or metal, and are, advantageously, of annular or spherical shape. Loaded wooden rings or thin metal sheets may be used. Bast or other fibrous material may be used in conjunction with other materials. A tank b, Fig. 1, is provided with bodies d, of the form shown in Fig. 2, which are. circulated by jets of air or water from a pipe or pipes a situated below a grating c. The pipe a may be given a vibratory movement. If buoyant bodies are used they may be acted on by jets from manually controlled sprinklers. A wire grating may be provided to prevent the bodies being washed out of the tank during the cleaning operation.
