Abstract

In apparatus for impregnating fabric &c. webs, the web, either during or after treatment with impregnating liquid, is guided over a part or parts provided with openings through which suction is applied. By this means air bubbles are removed. In one form of apparatus, the web passes over a table having an opening in the form of a slot or sieve respectively, and the liquid is poured on to the upper surface of the web. The guide for the web may alternatively consist of a perforated drum. The liquid may be applied to the under surface of the web while suction is applied to the upper surface, or the liquid may be applied to the same side as the suction. In another form of apparatus, the perforated guides are immersed in a tank of liquid through which the web is passed, the guide being a slotted tube, or a perforated plate or drum. The degree of vacuum applied depends upon the permeability of the fabric and the viscosity of the liquid. The liquid drawn through the openings is collected and freed from air bubbles in suitable apparatus in the suction system. When a liquid containing a volatile solvent is used, apparatus for the recovery of the solvent may be used in the suction system.
