Abstract
358,456. Electro-medical appliances; treating diseases with radiations. BORNHARDT, F., 21, Hainertrift, Buchschlag, Germany. April 4, 1930, No. 10768. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 81 (ii).] An electrode is provided with a radioactive substance and is so constructed that the alpha particles and the emanation can pass into the electric field before the electrode." The radioactive surface of the electrode can be increased by the provision of projections &c., or the coating of radioactive salt may be coarsely crystalline. According to one modification, Fig. 3, the radioactive substance is placed in chambers b, c in the electrode. According to another modification, Fig. 4, an electrode comprises a body of carbon d upon which a layer e of radioactive salt is placed. The electrode may be connected to the secondary winding of a transformer through a rectifying valve, the other end of the secondary being connected to earth. The electrode is thus given a positive potential of 40-100 kilovolts. Highfrequency voltages may also be used. The electrodes may be given a transitory activity by being placed in a closed insulated container together with a radioactive substance, the electrode being connected to the positive pole and the radioactive preparation to the negative pole of a source of current. The radioactive substances referred to are radium, molybdenum, bismuth alloys, or radium, thorium or actinium compounds such as radiumthorium oxide, radium-thorium nitrate or radiumbarium sulphate.
