<PICT:0358133/IV/1> For the washing of hairy or woolly hides or skins, the latter in a flat position are moved along an inclined path into and out of a washing bath, and during such motion are subjected to the pressure of a roll situated above the liquid of the bath and arranged to rotate with the same peripheral speed as and in unison with the hide &c. A suitable machine comprises a table 4, on which the hide or skin is laid flat, mounted in an inclined position and adapted to move on a roller 3 and rails 8; the table is supported by a counterweight 48, and is reciprocated by rack-and-pinion 12, 13, 18 actuated from the main drive shaft 19, the table in one extreme position entering the vat 1. Reversal of the motion of the table is effected by lever 30 engaging stops 41 on the table and connected by cords to the belt shifter 29 controlling a system of open and crossed belts for driving the shaft 19; the handle 60 of the lever 30 may be turned down at any time to render the reversing-mechanism non-operative. A roll 50 mounted above the table is driven by gearing from the shaft 19.
