Abstract

357,974. Battery charging systems. MACKLEY, A. H., 15, Waterloo Road, Bedford. June 26, 1930, No. 19477. [Class 38 (iv).] A charging device for the accumulator of a self-contained lamp comprises a casing to which the mains are connected through a lamp and resistance, the latter being automatically cut out when the accumulator is placed in the casing for charging. Fig. 2 shows the charging casing and Fig. 4 the circuit. The lamp comprises an accumulator 2 and bulb 4 and a switch 5 which can be closed or opened by push-buttons 6, 7. The charging casing 14 is divided into two compaitments by a horizontal partition 18 which carries a projection 17 which depresses the button 7 when the lamp is inserted and places the switch 5 in the open position. On the underside of the partition 18 is also mounted a switch consisting of a lever 20 pivoted at 21 and normally resting on a contact 22. When the lamp is inserted in the casing 14, a projection on the lamp, which may be the button 6, moves the switch into the position shown in Fig. 4 in which it makes contact with a terminal 12 on the lamp. In this position current from the mains 29, 34 passes through a lamp 33 and through the switch 20 to the accumulator 2. When the accumulator is removed from the casing 14 the switch 20 moves under the action of a spring on to the contact 22 and the circuit is completed through the lamp 33 and a resistance 24. The valve of the latter is equal to the resistance of the accumulator and can be adjusted by rotating the pin 26, Fig. 2, through an opening in the top of the casing 14. With A.C. mains a rectifier is included in the circuit. Specification 315,938, [Class 38 (iv), Electric supply and transmission systems &c.], is referred to.
