Abstract

A resorcinol-aldehyde condensation product, for use in coating a paper &c. core in the manufacture of gramophone records, is prepared or treated with ferric chloride, so that it hardens very rapidly (in about two seconds or less) when the groove is being impressed. In preparing the coating composition, resorcinol and formaldehyde may be heated together, in specified proportions, at a temperature of 70 DEG to 75 DEG C., until a viscous syrup is obtained. This is cooled, and ferric chloride dissolved in glycerine is added, the weight of the ferric chloride being from 1/2 to 1 1/2 per cent that of the resorcinol used. The mixture is then thinned with alcohol.
