Abstract
In a base-exchange filter a granular filtering material whose specific gravity is less than that of the base-exchanging filtering material is disposed directly on top of the base-exchanging filter material without an intermediate perforated support. The granular filtering material may possess greater mechanical durability than the base-exchanging filtering material and may be, for example, crushed or granulated porous slag or moler brick. The fineness of grading of the lower layers of the granular filtering material may approximate to the fineness of grading of the top layers of the base-exchanging filtering material.
