Abstract

356,764. Spray carburetters. CARTER CARBURETOR CORPORATION, 2838, North Spring Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. May 6, 1930, No. 13944. Convention date, July 3, 1929. [Class 7 (iii).] In carburetters having a primary fuel and air mixing chamber and a secondary rich mixture and air mixing chamber there are provided an annular valve slidably mounted on the primary mixing chamber for closing the air inlet to the secondary mixing chamber, a spring-controlled valve for substantially restricting the air supply to the primary mixing chamber to cause flooding thereof for starting the engine, and means for interconnecting the two valves. The main mixing chamber 76 constituted by the casting 22 has a petrol nipple 27 to which fuel passes from the float chamber and there is a well to which air passes through a passage 24. Air to the standpipe is controlled by a valve 64 slidable on the pipe and under spring restraint. Slidable on the pipe 22 is a casting which has a face 36 adapted to close the air entrance to the final mixing chamber 31, and it is provided with restricted openings 73 controlled by a disc valve 60 and having openings 63 in the hood 61 whereby when an engine starts up limited air is admitted. The throttle control valve 29 is interconnected by levers 34, 54 with sleeve 35 on the air valve casting. When starting up the engine the parts are disposed as in Figs. 1 and 4, the relieved pressure of the spring 70 permitting the spring 68 to close the valve 64 so that air is admitted only at the port 24, bleed hole 45 and slightly at 64 and the suction causes fuel to flow up the main jet. As soon as the engine starts, the increased suction raises the disc valve 60 and admits secondary air to adjust the mixture. As the engine warms the choke member 36 is lowered with consequent lowering and opening of the valve 64 whereby the substantially rich mixture in 76 is mixed in 31 with air entering the throat 12.
