Abstract

356,230. Automatic guns. AUTOMATIC GUNS, Inc., 924, 17th Street, Washington, U.S.A. Feb. 28, 1930, No. 6765. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1929. [Class 92 (ii).] Relates to gas-operated guns of the type in which the gas-piston 54 moves forwardly to compress a main spring 91 which reacts to unlock the breechbolt 13 and move it rearwardly against the action of a return spring 45. The invention particularly relates to guns of this type in which the locking- block 29 is slidable transversely in the breechbolt away from a fixed shoulder on the receiver by a slotted rod R which is clutched to the gaspiston on the rearward stroke thereof and which, after releasing the breech-bolt and moving it rearwards, is automatically declutched ready for a fresh compression of the main spring. According to the invention the rod R reciprocates in a line parallel with the axis of the gun barrel, and has an inclined slot 74 for conveying transverse movement to the locking-block the momentum of the rod during closing of the breech serving to move the block to locking position. The rear face of the locking-block is wedge-shaped to facilitate locking. The rod R has a forward extension 67 which enters an aperture 65 in a frame 57 carried by the gas piston rod 55 the aperture having spring- controlled catches 66, Fig. 12, for clutching the rod 67, declutching being effected when members 70 engage the stationary casing 61 as the breech-bolt completes its rearward movement. The firing-pin 17 is cocked against an automatic sear 33 during closing movement of the breech-bolt, the sear being released by an extension 31 on the locking-block only when the breech is closed and locked. The cartridge case is extracted by hooks 23, Fig. 4, on the breech-bolt and ejected by spring- pressed members 24 housed in the receiver. The rod R is movable rearwards manually by a handle 79 and is retained in rear position by a hand-sear 81 released by a trigger 85. The return spring 45 is compressed by a sleeve 40 which also engages a buffer-spring 50, the springs being adjusted by rotating a casing.46 by means of a knob 48. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes (1) the alternative form of firing mechanism shown in Fig. 8, and the hand-operated cocking and releasing means for the firing pin in case of missfire, shown in Fig. 12, of Specification 356,225, (2) the safety device preventing a double-feed of cartridges to the barrel which forms the subject-matter of Specification 356,226, and (3) the muzzle-attachment for diminishing recoil forming the subject-matter of Specification 356,224. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
