Abstract
355,469. Centrifugal fans. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and JENNINGS, D. A., of General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. July 22, 1930, No. 22113. [Class 110 (i).] A ventilating fan driven by an electric motor 16 delivers a stream of air through an opening in the casing ; the air passing through the fan acts upon a member attached to the casing thereby causing the latter to rotate so that the air stream sweeps over a wide area. The fixed support consists of a base 1, top plate 3 and bottom plate 2 connected by rods 4, and crimped wires 10 forming a guard. The fan has blades 24 fixed between a disc 21 and a ring 23 ; the latter is uppermost and it forms the inlet side of the fan. The blades may be pressed from sheet iron and have curved faces 26. The casing 15 has a bottom plate 27, a top plate 28 with a central opening 42. The wall 29 is a cylindrical wall with the same axis as the impeller, but the wall 30 is of involute form ; the walls 29, 30 merge together at the point 34, while at the other side of the gap 41 they are joined by an intermediate wall 33 which is inclined at approximately 45‹ to the diameter at that place. Two vanes 35 are arranged across the gap 41 to deflect the discharging air upwards and downwards. A blade 38 is secured to the wall 30 and may be set in any position about its pivot by means of the screw 39. Air passing through the apparatus acts on this blade and causes the casing 15 to rotate on the bearing 32. Governor arms 44 are carried by pivots 43 on the bottom of the casing, and have leather pads 46 to engage the steel brake ring 47. When the casing 15 commences to rotate, the inertia of the parts keeps the arms against the stop 48, but as the speed increases centrifugal force acts upon the arms and causes the pads 46 to engage the ring 47 to exert a braking effect. An electric heater 51 is supported in the inlet of the fan, and a handle 7 is secured to the top plate.
