[Class 107.] In a machine of the kind described in the parent Specification, for picking up sand, gravel, &c., from heaps at the side of a road and distributing it over the road, the sand reservoir 7 is carried between the front and rear wheels, the suction pipe 9 for filling the reservoir is connected with a rotatably-mounted turret 80 forming with the reservoir an airtight space, and the outer end of the suction pipe 9 is provided with a rotary nozzle and supported by a carriage 30 movable along a horizontal beam 32 pivotally connected to the machine. Means may be provided for sweeping the road and spreading the tar or other binding medium on it before distributing the sand etc.; also for collecting surplus sand &c. The sand &c. is sucked into the reservoir by a fan 8 provided with a diffusing chimney 28, a filter consisting of vertical canvas sheets being provided in the reservoir to prevent the sand &c. from passing into the fan. The shaking of the machine cleans the filter automatically. A motor 12 drives the rear wheels 5, 6, the fan 8, and the suction nozzle, through gearing and clutches. The beam 32 supporting the carriage 30 carrying the outer end of the rigid suction pipe 9 is fixed on a vertical shaft 33 adapted to be partially rotated by a handwheel 52 and worm gearing. The suction nozzle is rotated by a shaft 37 which is movable vertically by a hand-wheel 44, a shaft 50, and bevel and screw gearing. The shaft 37 is driven by bevel and sprocket gearing from a moving endless chain passing through the carriage 30 and along the beam 32. The carriage 30 is moved along the beam by means of a hand-wheel 67, worm gearing, and an endless chain. The turret 80 turns with the vertical shaft 33 and is provided with apertures and movable yielding bellows 84 to receive the pipe 9. The suction nozzle comprises two tubes 87, 88, Fig. 7, connected together by helical partitions 90 and to the shaft 37 by stays 89 shaped as screw blades. The tube 87 fits over the pipe 9, air being excluded by a tongued part. The shorter outer tube 88 carries curved sloping blades 92, beneath which are secured yielding blades acting as brushes. For collecting surplus sand or other material from the road, an inclined rotary brush may be connected to the machine to sweep the material together for collection by a flat non- rotary nozzle 127, Fig. 13, flexibly connected to the suction pipe 9 and supported on shoes 130 connected to the machine frame by rods 129. A trailer may carry a reservoir for tar or other binding medium which may be passed under pressure through an atomizer disposed beneath the machine immediately behind the front steering wheels.
