Abstract
354,909. Etching. HADDAN, R., 31, Bedford Street, Strand, London.-(Corning Glass Works ; Walnut Street, Corning, New York, U.S.A.) June 6, 1930, No. 17623. [Class 100 (ii).] In order to prevent mechanical weakening, due to " weathering," of glass articles after frosting by acid-etching, aluminium salts are added to the wash-water. The salt used may be aluminium sulphate, fluoride; or the simple aluminium salt of an aliphatic organic acid. The amount added varies with the degree of purity of the wash-water used. For water containing 10 parts per million of lime, 2 of magnesia and 6 of sulphuric anhydride, 100 parts of aluminium fluoride are added, but the quantity may be increased up to 750 parts of the aluminium salt per million.
